How to choose a waterproofing system for bathrooms, terraces and tanks

There is no single “best” waterproofing product — the right system depends entirely on where the water is and how the surface moves. Here is how to choose a SUMO waterproofing system zone by zone.
Bathrooms & wet areas
Wet rooms need a flexible, fully bonded coating under the tiles. A two-component cementitious coating like SUMO Sealcrete 2K Plus flexes with the structure and takes tile adhesive directly on top. Pair it with a deformable wet-area adhesive (S04) and epoxy grout (Sumoxy) for a joint that never lets water through.
Terraces & roofs
Exposed terraces face sun, rain and daily thermal movement, so they need a seamless, elastic membrane that bridges cracks — SUMO Flexguard PU or the reinforced Terraceguard. For a cooler roof, Terraceguard Cool adds solar reflectivity.
Water tanks & permanent immersion
Tanks are permanently wet, so the system must stay bonded and impervious under constant water pressure. A flexible 2K cementitious coating (Sealcrete 2K Plus) is the standard choice, applied to a sound, prepared surface.
External walls & foundations
- External walls: acrylic waterproof coatings — Weatherguard (decorative, anti-algae) or a transparent WR Guard repellent for face brick and stone.
- Damp / seepage walls: Dampguard fibre-reinforced coating.
- Foundations & retaining walls: Bituguard EMP bituminous coating below ground.
- Within the concrete itself: LW Plus integral admixture, dosed at the mixer.
The best results almost always combine layers — an admixture in the structure, a coating or membrane on the surface. Tell the SUMO team the zone and the exposure and they will spec the full system.
