Almost every bathroom leak you'll ever chase starts in the same place. Not the middle of the floor. Not under the tiles where the water pools. The corner — where the floor meets the wall, where two walls meet, and around the drain and the pipe penetrations. Pull up the tiles on a leaking bathroom and nine times out of ten the field is bone dry and the corners are soaked.

Flat surfaces don't crack. Corners do.
A waterproofing coat sitting on a flat floor has an easy life. The concrete underneath barely moves, so the membrane over it barely moves.
A corner is the opposite. The floor slab and the wall are two different elements, and they move independently — the floor deflects slightly under load, the wall expands and contracts with heat, the whole structure settles over its first year or two. All of that movement concentrates exactly at the joint between them. It's a hinge.
Now picture a rigid, brittle waterproofing coat painted straight across that hinge. The first time the joint flexes, the coating tears along the corner — a crack you can't even see under the tiles. Water finds it, tracks along the wall base, and comes out as a damp patch in the next room or the ceiling below. The tiles look perfect. The corner failed months ago.
The fillet: the detail that does 80% of the work
The professional fix for a moving corner is almost embarrassingly simple, and it's the step site crews skip most often. You don't paint waterproofing into a sharp 90-degree internal corner. You round it off first.
Before waterproofing, run a cove fillet — a neat 45-degree haunch of polymer-modified mortar — all along every wall-to-floor and wall-to-wall internal corner. It turns the sharp right angle into a gentle curve. Two things happen: the membrane no longer has to bend around a sharp edge (where it always cracks), and the coating flows smoothly across the curve at an even thickness instead of pooling thin on the point of the angle.
That single detail — a fillet in every internal corner — prevents more bathroom leaks than any product upgrade.

Reinforce the joints before you flood the field
Even with a fillet, the corner is still the highest-stress line in the room, so you reinforce it. After the first coat of waterproofing goes on and is still tacky, you bed a waterproofing reinforcement tape or scrim into the corners, around the drain, and around every pipe that comes through the floor or wall. Then the second coat goes over it.
Think of it like steel in concrete. The membrane handles the water; the tape handles the movement, holding the coating together across the joint so it can flex without splitting. Corners, drain, pipe collars, the threshold at the door — those are the lines that get taped. Miss them and you've reinforced everything except the parts that actually move.
The rest of the method, in order
Once you know the corners are the enemy, the whole sequence makes sense:
- Prep and slope. Clean, sound, slightly damp concrete — no dust, no loose bits, no oil. Check the floor falls towards the drain; a bathroom floor with no slope holds standing water over the membrane forever, and standing water finds every weakness.
- Fillet every internal corner. The haunch, as above.
- First coat, worked well into the corners and penetrations. Don't just wave the brush over the corner — scrub it in.
- Tape the joints, drain and pipe collars into the wet coat.
- Second coat, at right angles to the first, to full thickness with no pinholes. Two thin-but-complete coats beat one thick, patchy one every time.
- Cure, then flood-test. Plug the drain, fill the floor with an inch of water, mark the level, leave it 24 hours. If the level's dropped, better to find out now than after the tiles and the false ceiling below are in.
- Turn the membrane up the walls — at least 150 mm everywhere, and full height in the shower. Water climbs.
