Blocks per m² depends only on the block face, so it is the same for every thickness — mortar consumption is what scales with thickness.
One 600 × 200 mm AAC block replaces several clay bricks of wall face, which is where the whole system economy comes from:
Fewer units to lay: ≈ 8.2 blocks per m² of wall versus dozens of bricks — walls rise visibly faster with less labour.
A fraction of the jointing material: 2–3 mm adhesive joints instead of 10–12 mm sand-cement beds — roughly a quarter of the mortar mass per m².
Much lighter walls: AAC is roughly a third the density of fired clay brick, which reduces the dead load the structure carries.
Straighter walls out of the box: dimensional accuracy means thinner plaster coats on top — the savings continue into the next trade.
Confirm the block size actually being delivered — a 230 mm block instead of 200 mm changes mortar consumption by ~15%.
Measure every door and window opening and enter them; openings are typically 15–25% of a wall.
Decide the joint now: 2–3 mm thin-bed. If the supplier suggests thicker "to adjust level", fix the first course instead.
Keep 5% block wastage for cutting — more if the design has many part-block ends.

With the standard 600 × 200 mm block face and a 3 mm joint, about 76 blocks per 100 sq.ft of wall — order ~80 with 5% wastage. The count is the same for every block thickness; only the mortar quantity changes.

Yes — openings are wall area you do not build. This calculator has fields for opening area (or width × height), deducts them before counting, and only then applies wastage.
For 600 × 200 × 100 mm blocks at a 3 mm joint, 100 blocks build about 12.2 m² of wall and use ≈ 45 kg of Block Jointing Mortar — just over one 40 kg bag.
They can, but a 10–12 mm site-mix bed wastes the dimensional accuracy AAC gives you: 4–5× more material, slower laying, joint curing, and thicker thermal bridges. Thin-bed Block Jointing Mortar at 2–3 mm is the system AAC is designed for.
